Alternative power

Powertech also recommends consideration be given to an alternative power supply system. This will be because of the cost to get power from the electricity network or because power is not available to you due to your location. Powertech now supplies and installs these types of systems.

Builders Temps (See also Temporary Supplies for events)

Builders temps are medium term power supplies. If the box is un metered, then 3 months is usually the maximum. If the project takes longer then it should be metered. commercial units are available to plug into for larger projects and are three phase.

Some situations require the permanent mains cable to be installed up to the house site. Two options are then available. We can install our small black boxes with a meter in it or, we can supply and install your house meter box on a post with a builders safety socket installed on it. When your house wall is built, your electrician can then shift it to the new wall.

Budget prices for new subdivisions

Powertech offers a design and build service for electrical reticulation. We can offer a price for power supply as well as streetlights for new subdivisions and subdivision of property. Depending on the size of the project, a quote can be given but it is always conditional to final approval from local bodies.

The majority of quotes and estimates are free but some may incur a charge.

Due to the size of some projects, full sets of engineering drawings will be required to be done and submitted to the local bodies for approval. Once this is done, a firm quotation can be given. All costs associated with drawing, design and submission will become payable.

We will liaise between local bodies.

Cable sales

Powertech offers cable sales to electricians and other associated trades. Due to the electrical wiring regulations, Powertech strongly recommends that a registered person installs all cable. Our most common sale to people outside of the industry is for people who are supplying cable for their project and there own electrician is installing it for them.

Powertech can assist with cable size calculations based on the information supplied. Our preference is to meet on site and measure, in some circumstances if you are increasing your capacity or, if not much information is available. There is no charge for this within the Nelson region. We are happy to offer advice and suggest any options.

If you have already decided what size and quantity you want, we would be happy to quote on this.

Power cable installations for network extensions can only be done by authorised companies, which Powertech is, within the Nelson region.

Easements

Easements to Power Line Companies

Easements are required in favour of Power Line Companies within the Nelson District.

Any new works or alterations that are inside or cross private property that will become part of a Power Line Company requires an easement. This includes crossing private property air space.

Easement windows for overhead lines are 6 metres wide and includes the area around any guy wires that strain the line up.

Easement windows for underground cables are 3 metres wide and are to take into consideration any ground planted equipment such as service boxes, ground planted switches and transformers.

Easements are not required in road reserve but permission from the local councils will still be required. Easements crossing reserves are usually crossing a council title and easements will be required.

Easements are not required if you need to install a transformer, overhead line and underground cable on your property and it only feeds one connection. A license agreement is required but this will still be at the discretion of the local bodies. This always requires confirmation from the local authorities and they may still insist on having an easement. If more than one connection is required in the future, we would advise an easement be arranged now.

Service easements

A service easement is required when one service cuts through another title to supply another. This is registered on the title and is in favour of the individual titles and not a Power Line Company.

We recommend that easement windows are the same as the Line Company windows. This is not compulsory but we strongly recommend this.

Easements need to be created on new lots if services cut through them.

The maximum distance that a private cable can run in road reserve is 10 metres.

We cannot arrange easements for you. We strongly recommend that if easements are required off a third party, secure this in writing as power cannot be switch on until easements are legally entered into.

Power Line Companies have standard easement documents and are available from them.

Easements are required to be surveyed and copies of survey drawings and legal documents will be required to be submitted to local bodies.

Easements will generally be required before construction starts except for the following:

Easements will be granted as part of the subdivision being done which will all be internal.

Construction is required to establish the full and final route of easement windows for survey. This is common for over head line projects.

Easements that require agreement from a third party do not have to be granted by them. If this is the case alternatives, if any, need to be explored.

Existing power lines constructed before 1992 do not need easements and is classed as Existing Works. Unless it is for maintenance, any change needs to be covered by an easement.
